A crane rental is often the best option when moving heavy materials or equipment from the ground or a truck to an elevated location. Commercial construction sites often use cranes to move things, but if you do not have a crane on the job site, a crane and operator rental may be ideal.

Crane Operators

An experienced crane operator who knows the equipment and its use is critical to any lift. Often the crane operator that comes to your site with a crane rental has many years of experience operating the machine they are bringing.

Lifting equipment or materials to the roof of a building or moving them over a structure to put them on the other side can be highly challenging. Blind lifts that block the line of sight on the package being lifted typically require a spotter or rigger that can direct the crane operator, so you may find that the rental includes both the operator and the rigger when the crane arrives on-site.

Often the crane operator will also not be able to see the package as it crosses a roofline or if it gets too far overhead to see it out of the windshield of the machine. The operator and the spotter or rigger are often the only people involved in spotting the load. Still, if you have an experienced crew and have worked with the crane operator, they may be okay with you or a crew member directing the lift.

Renting The Crane

When you determine you need a crane rental for a job, contact the crane rental service and let them know what you are lifting and how high it needs to go. If you know there are complications involved like overhead wires or other obstructions, let the rental company know so they can look at the job in advance, determine the best crane for the lift, and choose the correct operator to move the load.

In some situations, a smaller crane that is just large enough to make the lift is required to fit in tight quarters, and other times the machine must be oversized to have enough reach to clear obstacles in the lift path. The crane rental company can help you determine the best place to lift from and if there are trees in the way or items that you can remove to make the process easier.

When it is time to make the lift, the crane operator must have complete say over whether the lift happens or not. If the lift is not safe, the rental company may shut down the operation until the situation can be made safe for you, your crew, the crane operator, and the machine.
