In today's economy, manufacturing firms are often tasked with relocating their plants to larger facilities or to facilities that are more affordable. Moving essential equipment is one of the most challenging aspects of a plant relocation. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to make this process much easier.

Evaluate the Condition of Your Equipment

One of the first tasks you should perform is to review the condition of your equipment. A plant relocation is the perfect time to retire equipment that is in poor condition or outdated. Rather than transporting an old piece of equipment, you can order and have a new piece of equipment transported to your new facility.

Don't Waste Money On Old Equipment

Typically, it costs more to repair and relocate equipment than it does to purchase new equipment. Also, if the equipment is very old, you may find it more difficult to purchase replacement parts, especially in a new location. If your transported equipment breaks down soon afterward and you can't find a replacement part, all of the work of relocating it will be for nothing.

Have a Plan for Disposing of Old Equipment

You must have a plan for what to do with old equipment. You may be able to sell the equipment or at least earn something back by selling working parts. Defective equipment can still be refurbished and reused. You must also have an eco-conscious plan for selling whatever parts and materials you are not able to sell.

Consider the Size of Your New Plant

Consider whether you have an appropriate amount of equipment for your plant. If you will be expanding, you may need to purchase more equipment. If you are downsizing, you may find that some of your older equipment should be disposed of simply because there isn't enough room.

Create a List for Your Equipment

Create a list of all the equipment you will be testing. Make sure to record the results so that other personnel remain informed and so you do not perform tests more than once. Also, track which equipment has been relocated already so that nothing is left behind. You do not want to halt production because the equipment you need has not arrived yet.

Consider Hiring Plant Relocation Experts

While you can try to take on this task yourself, you may find it much easier to work with plant relocation services. Hiring outside professionals will allow you to focus on your core business and keep the transition smooth.
